My partner and I have decided to get another dog. I want a Labrador and He wants a BMD. I have a Staffy Bull, shes gorgeous, and brilliantly well trained, she gets on with all dogs, (that get on with her anyway) I have been doing alot of research I know that a Lab is what i want, but my partner is so sure he wants the BMD We have a Fair sized house, 3bed, with a dining room that has been turned into a puppy room as i do obedience classes, We have a large garden, with 8.5 foot fencing around it, we also have a small pool that we build ourselves for my old dog that benifitted from hydrotheropy. I know that labs love water as they were used as fishing dogs. I know that they need alot of excercise which is fine becasue i also do dog walking. so i am out 4 to 6 times a day. The BMD were and are cart dogs, people have told me they walk them to the shops with carts on and the carry the shopping home things like that. They are working dogs which i always believed needed constant stimulation... I am really torn, what does everyone think? also whats the best gender? Im not interested in breeding. Becasue i am a dog trainer and walker there will always be someone around, there is also my Staff who is 16months now and spayed. I don't have to worry about hair shedding, I have a red staffs that malts everywhere, and i do dog training and walking, im always covered in dog hair.

The Berners live to be only seven, on average. You'll have a puppy for two years, a healthy adult for two years, and a senior citizen for three years.

Few things off the top of my head:
BMDs can be really sensitive to heat. I'd take that into consideration if in a hot part of the country. They both do fine in cooler areas though.
A Labrador will mean dealing with a lot of shedding.
Just as a generalization, I find males tend to be a little more affectionate on average. That's a broad generalization though and just my personal experience.

I'm familiar with Labs but only tangentially with Bernese MDs. If the new dog is not going to have a lot of human interaction, the Lab is probably the best way to go but even they're prone to boredom and misbehavior. Another consideration is which one of you, you or your partner, enjoy grooming duties because a Bernese is going to need more than a Lab. Every BMD site I went to for more information commented on this breed's intelligence and need for stimulation. Like all working breeds, they also need training and respond best when they learn early on that the human is the alpha in the relationship. I've had other dogs with these same needs and, if you're willing to put in the work and the time - and be consistent about it, you get a really great companion. When it came to my dogs, I always described my terrier and my lab-pit mix as "much-loved dogs" and my big (92 lb), smart, working girl as my trusted companion and friend - I was doing biological field work and she always went with.

Hi Staffie lover, Personality wise the Labrador and the Bernese Mountain Dog have the same similar laid back personality. They are steady tempered and easy going.
Where you have to start rethinking would be size. The Bernese can weigh in at 120 pounds. Very muscular, very powerful. The Labrador, too can be a very powerful dog, but only weighs in at 75 pounds. That can be a huge difference in trying to get a dog from point A to point B.
The other BIG difference is in the life expectancy. The Labrador can live a good 13 to 15 years, but on the other hand, the Bernese Mountain dog only gets a good 7 or 8 years.
Labradors and Bernese Mountain Dogs can be trained to do all sorts of "tricks", cart pulling and the such. So, whichever you choose... you will get a great dog.
My 2 cents, Rose

I think they are both really nice dogs, its just that Labs are easier to find ( where I live at least), especially in shelters. BMD's I think are rarer- in a way. With your question about BMD's and constant simulation, I have a Siberian Husky ( working dog) and even though he is getting older, he has always been really active, but he doesn't need constant stimulation. If you did constantly stimulate your dog, he might get tired out quicker, or not, because they are working dogs. duh. But if a dog is overstimulated it could get overwhelmed, which might lead to aggression. BUT. every dog is different, so this might not be true.
LABS. labs are really popular, and there is no doubt why. They get along really great with other people and animals, and they are highly trainable. because you have a pool, your lab WILL really love it. I think this would be a great dog for you, as well as the BMD.
There really is no "better gender", so whatever dog you pick, there will be no difference whatsoever.
