Okay so I'm wondering what possibly could have happened to my friend's dog.

The Scottish Terrier was taken from a fairly secure garden, then brought back about 6 hours later. We didn't see who the person was, it was if the dog was taken in the morning while no one was really around, and after we had been searching the whole area for hours, when we arrived home, he was sitting on the doorstep looking poorly and traumatised. The dog was extremely ill looking, it couldn't eat or walk much and it's tail was constantly right down. It also couldn't stop drinking. So the next day, he was taken to a pet hospital and it was confirmed he had been poisoned, as his stomach was infected and heart was also affected.

I'm wondering why someone would do this ? Have you ever heard of, or experienced a similar type of bizarre situation ? I don't get why someone would do this, or even why if they for some reason hated the dog, bring it back !?

Maybe it ran away (jumped over a fence) and ate something poisonous. Do you have a neighbor that would have a reason do that? Does the dog bark, poo somewhere is shouldn't be pooing? Maybe the person just doesn't like dogs. I know it's hard to believe but some people are just mean and do not think dog have souls or that they can suffer.

That is terrible, I'm sorry.  There are sick people in the world.. When I was 13, still living in Texas at the time, we had neighbors down the street that dog-fight, so already they have no respect whatsoever to dogs.  And at this time, my family had 2 retreiver/labs and a fox terrier.  One night, I heard the Terrier barking at the door to come inside, so I let her in, and she had made a red paw-trail all throughout the living room, my parents saw it, flipped, and went outside to find one of our labs beat to death, and bled out on our front porch. my other lab was traumazited and couldn't find him (we searched all night) till 2 days later, he was hiding in a ditch. We couldn't confirm it was the dog-fighting neighbors, but it's not hard to put the puzzle peices together. That was a very sad moment in my life, i don't know how people are so messed up in the head.

When you say the garden was 'secure',  do you mean from human invasion, or canine excursion?

Because, if you can see no reason why a stranger (or perhaps an irritated neighbor) would do something like this, the dog may have dug itself out on its own, and eaten something it shouldn't have. That's far more likely than someone actually abducting the dog, especially if he/she came back.

Or, if you're sure that it was a humans doing, think about some annoying tendencies the dog has; rampant barking, biting, or even 'over the boarder' defecating. These are the most common reasons neighbors complain. In this case, the offender took their displeasure to an extreme. As for returning the dog, they wanted to make a point in showing you what they'd done. A warning, if you will.

Still, the former is FAR more likely than the latter. I hope the dog gets better soon!

No one can answer why someone would do this.  One can only guess.  People like this are pathetic.  They like to hurt someone/something weaker and smaller than they are.  My guess is they brought the dog back thinking it would die and that would hurt the owners.

No garden is secure if someone wants in.  Probably only secure in the sense that the dog cannot get out.  Probably should never leave the dog out by itself again.  Especially when no one is home.  I would be very careful about leaving it out by itself even if I was home.  Someone could throw a poisoned something in that the dog could eat.  Even before I went out with the dog I would check the yard to see if there is something that shouldn't be there that the dog could get into.

...

You can't possibly expect a viable answer to your question from any sane person on the DS!

There is NO reason for such a thing to occur!  And anyone who would do such a thing has serious mental health issues going on that are a danger to not only innocent animals, but to anyone around this person.

I hope your friend's vet was able to save this poor, sweet dog.  I don't know where your friend lives, but I know I would NEVER let my dog out of my personal sight again if I remained in that community!  And I would be asking my neighbors if they saw anything suspicious that day.

My prayers for your friend and his dog!

Some people have no hearts and get off on harming poor innocent animals that can't help thereselves? It is a very sad and horrible thing and I wish I could go around poisoning the humans who intentionally poison and harm animals! There is a dog park by my home that people actually hang pieces of raw meat soaked in antifreeze on the fence in hopes of killing the dogs.....
I really wish I could answer your question better but I can't... All I can say is there is some really cruel and sick individuals in this world!! I hope the dog is ok!!
