My dog Jack is about 5 years old and is very overweight. I worry because my other dog was also over weight and died of a stroke. Any tips? Suggestions?

Food: He eats a cup of Pedigree Dog Food a day. We give him treats on occasion, like every week or so.

Exercise: I am very busy, so I give him maybe a ten minute walk every week. He's pretty lazy, so he usually just sleeps all day. He is matured, so he wouldn't do anything else (but he chews on bones ALOT).

If you have any tips or suggestions PLEASE comment to me. I love my Jack SOOO much I really wouldn't want anything to happen to him. Thank you Smiley

Stop stuffing it to death.
50% less feed...& nothing else.
Took 5 years to get obese-will not slim overnight.

you are giving him a 10 minutes walk every week and you are asking for tips, seriously dude ??
take him for a walk an hour every single day and you'll see the results !!

Feeding you dog Pedigree is like feeding him cheeseburgers. That food is AWFUL. You need to looking into a higher quality dog food and feed him what it recommends on the back of the bag. Don't free feed him. Split his meals into 2 meals a day. He needs more exercise or nothing is going to change.

I understand you are busy but if you really love him you need to make the time to have him exercise. Even if you are inside, throw a ball around, chase and play with your dog. If you can't pay someone to walk him but this will shorten his lifespan and you know this. Obesity can cause arthritis and much more. Good luck : )

I would STOP the treats completly, and as hes over weight I would say do a 5 min walk per day for the first 2 weeks, then 10 minutes there after, feed him 3/4 of a cup divided into 2 meals.
What breed is he?

First of all, our vet, whom we trust, says that out of the over-the-counter foods, Pedigree is not so bad at all.

You did not say what kind of dog you have, but if he is overweight, he's getting too much to eat.  You also did not say what kind of "cup" you are using.  It needs to be an 8 ounce measuring cup.

Here's a trick to try if you are not willing to see a vet (which you should do.)
Put the food into the bowl, just like you usually do.  Then pour it back into a real measuring cup and see how much it really is.  Cut it by 25% and start to feed that much per feeding instead.

See if your dog will eat baby, raw carrots for treats.  Lots of treats are very high in fat, salt, etc, to make them taste really good to dogs.  If he won't eat carrots, then cut his treats by 25-50%  Try breaking them in half.

A nice, little walk would be good for both of you.  Get up 20 minutes earlier and put your walking clothes by the bed.  Put them on and take your dog 10 min out and 10 min back.  That's a good way to create the time to do it, and you will not miss the 20 min sleep.

Dogs aren't lazy ---they are out of shape and don't feel like running around.  Once his weight is under control, he will feel better.  One more thing --- you really need to have a vet exam if it's been over a year since he's been in.  Dogs sometimes have thyroid issues that can keep them sluggish and overweight.

If you love Jack so much, then you'll get a handle on this.  He can live to be 14 if you follow all your vet's suggestions.

Jack russels are terriers and active ones at that. Their tenacity can be unmatched in hunting, agility, or even tormenting the household cat or back yard squirrel. You should look into getting a dog walker. Your dog is an athlete with no sport or event. Maybe you could take the dog with you to work. If you are like most of us and don't have one of those jobs then maybe look for a dog walker.
Your dog is going crazy wit the chewing thing just to burn excess energy.
