Or what would seem to be supernatural powers, anyways. Like if you were absolutely serious about using the spirit world (Satan, demons, or just an ordinary dead dude) to obtain material things, AND DIDN'T USE IT TO HURT ANYONE, is there any kind of promise, or contract perhaps, to enforce this?

Well, yes, but its unspoken. Its an exchange of energy. In a way, you renounce religion because to follow any religion is to obtain enlightenment through the grace of god. You be good, and he gives it to you. If you werent as good as you were supposed to be, he gives you more lessons. Its simple.
But to obtain enlightenment through knowledge, thats different. Its like every day saying to the universe, "I give you this, in exchange for this. I want...Precognition. I will give (insert something) as a sacrifice"
If you are evil, you can use living beings and their energy as sacrifice. If you arent, you can use your own energy, good deeds, that type of thing.
Aside from that, Im sure, somewhere in this world there is a spell you can use to gain power. Its probably in the vatican.

There are no powers that exist outside the powers of Nature, what we believe to be supernatural is either a part of Nature we do not understand or simply not true. For the longest time simple magnets were considered supernatural, now that we understand the principles of magnetism we no longer consider them supernatural, did we change the way they work? No, we simply understand them now. This is true for all "Supernatural" powers, they either exist and we don't understand them yet or they don't exist.
With regards to the spirit realm, this is a case of mind over matter... or more appropriately, mind over energy. Do I think this exists? Yes but it requires a vast amount of self control and force of will.
