...calling me a liar, if others are there to hear it?

I spent a two years in prison and much of this was spent in solitary confinement due to my big mouth. In confinement we were only allowed religious literature, and we have nothing but free time to read. I read the NIV from cover-to-cover in about three months, then a Christian corrections officer I spoke to was appalled and demanded that the NIV was the "wrong version" of the Bible, so I read the KJV, which took almost six months. With plenty of time remaining on my sentence, I read the AJ Arberry translation of the Koran. I also read about 1/3 of the Book of Mormon before my release.

When these facts came out in Philosophy 2113 yesterday, my professor called me a liar in front of the class. His exact words were, "Frankly, I believe you are lying." This has hurt my reputation among my colleagues and classmates. It also made me angry enough to fight, though I held it inside. I would rather be accused of almost anything other than lying.

What is my recourse, and how do I prevent future insults of this nature?

You can't sue anyone for anything if you can't prove damages.

.

Well, if you can quote, verbatim, a few chapters of any one of those books.....that ought to do it.

Actually, yes. You can sue people for "Slander" if what they say makes you suffer any losses. Celebrities and politicians do it all the time, they often get fairly good settlements out of them.

Talk to a lawyer if you really want to sue someone.

Report him to the dean for insulting you in front of class and demand an apology.

If you read the Bible twice you should know that we should forgive and should not sue. The Bible teaches us to allow God to be the one that obtains vengeance not us. also you may want to quote some scripture to your professor this may help to convince him of your feat

you could tell him and the class what you told us.  or you could ignore him and the class.  why do you care what they think?  you know you did it.  take the class, get a good grade, and move on

A lot of the other answers seem good to me, quoting part of one of the books would probably help, or you could simply ask him if *he had ever read the bible or the koran.

Do nothing. Whether he believes you or not is not the issue. Let him think you are a liar. Appearances mean nothing. And you could probably sue, but don't. It does nothing but hurt the community, and the lawyer would take most of the money anyway. Be the bigger man. (by the way, the more you tell people who call you a liar that "you don't have to believe it", the more they will believe you.)

If someone's opinion is that you are lying, it is not slander for them to say so.

The best way to keep people from accusing you of lying is to quit stating the thing that people disbelieve.

Who cares if you've read the books you said you have?   Just know that you've read them and quit trying to convince others.

Of course you could sue them instead.

Whatever you prefer....
